Recycling Bike Inner Tubes: Turning Waste into Wonder

As we launch some of our projects, we’re fully embracing a greener lifestyle here at Brilliant Bamboo. When one of our masterclass leaders (as part of our Brilliant Bamboo Brownfield Parklet) included bike inner tubes on their materials list, it sparked a conversation about how we can incorporate more recycling and reuse—both during the project and in the long run.

Stoke-on-Trent, is a city with deep industrial roots but also home to a growing eco-conscious community. At Brilliant Bamboo, we’re committed to repurposing materials wherever possible, playing our part in making Stoke a greener, more sustainable place.

Punctured inner tubes might seem like waste, but they’re actually full of potential. Made from durable rubber, they can be repurposed in numerous ways. In our masterclasses, we’ll use them as flexible joints in bamboo structures, and for securing bamboo connections by wrapping them for added strength and flexibility.

Many local bike shops are happy to donate or recycle used inner tubes. When Sally (Project Manager) reached out to bike shops in Stoke-on-Trent, she found that Church Cycle Works and Cyclist Discount Centre were more than willing to give some away. This sparked discussions about bamboo bikes and a local company repurposing inner tubes into purses.

By reusing this material, we are not just reducing waste— we are adopting a creative, hands-on approach to sustainability. Whether for creating, building or gardening, small actions can make a big difference.
