Our plans for the Brilliant Bamboo Brownfield Parklet have always included you, our neighbours, residents and communities on our doorstep and who might want to be involved and visit the site. To do this meaningfully, and for the time we’re stewards of the site.
Our original set-up and start of the project for us was through the Stoke Town High Street Accelerator Greenspace Fund through Stoke-on-Trent City Council and their community/business panel, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government – thank you!
We worked with Dana Jundi, through her consultancy to run creative consultations as part of three of our events, two in August and one in October, to explore hopes and ideas for the site. Thanks Dana! This blog shares the short version of her longer report, which is available here. If any work is used or shared, please let us know.

First Impressions: People noticed the site’s mix of nature and industry, sparking curiosity, nostalgia and emotional connections. Children were inspired by wildlife like ladybirds and flowers.
Surprises: Creative activities (screen printing, performances, obstacle course) were a hit with participants. One visitor was surprised at “how lovely you can make scrapland if you just put people in it”.
Ideas for the Site: Suggestions ranged from flower beds, orchards and sensory gardens to obstacle courses, climbing, cycling, outdoor gyms, choirs, live performances, markets and food stalls. Comfort and accessibility were highlighted, alongside community events, study spaces and student links. People also asked for more seating, shade and publicity. There was also a suggestion that more is made of the outward-facing parts of the parklet to draw people in.
Feeling Welcome: Accessibility (paths, signage, buggy shelters, dog-friendly features) and comfort (benches, beanbags, buddy benches, shaded areas) were key. People want both lively and quiet spaces.
Meaning for Stoke: The Parklet could be a welcoming and inclusive where nature, creativity and connection flourish.

Conclusion
The consultation shows that the Parklet is already sparking excitement, creativity and emotional connection. Local people see its potential to become a vibrant, inclusive and multi-functional hub for Stoke that supports nature, creativity, play and community pride.
We’re in the process of looking at the feedback and picking up those that feel achievable, possible and right for the site. We always need your help, by coming along, volunteering, telling your friends. We’ll report back when we can and we’re always open to ideas. Be in touch!
