Following the success of the UK Bamboo Summit 2025, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Rebecca Reubens: World Bamboo Ambassador and Sustainable Designer at Rhizome (Ahmedabad, India) to North Staffordshire for a talk about her work that crosses sustainability, craft and design.
Rebecca founded Rhizome in 2009, it was India’s first multidisciplinary sustainability design studio. She began her journey in bamboo at the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), where she worked across Asia, Africa and Europe. Rhizome works in the space of sustainable luxury through its eponymous label and its sustainable jewellery label called Baka.

Dr. Rebecca Reubens is an alumna of NIFT Delhi and NID Ahmedabad in India. She completed her PhD on the links between sustainability, craft and design at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. She began her journey in bamboo at the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), where she worked across Asia, Africa and Europe. She continues to remain engaged with bamboo through her practice at Rhizome, the sustainability design studio she founded in 2009, in Ahmedabad. Rhizome works in the space of sustainable luxury through its eponymous label and its sustainable jewellery label called Baka. Rebecca continues to consult independently to the international development sector, and has served on several Indian government panels aligned with different aspects of development and bamboo.
Rebecca remains linked to academia through her teaching and writing. She is the author of several publications, including Bamboo: From Green Design to Sustainable Design for the Prins Claus Fonds.
